But what about our hometown of Spokane, Washington?

Spokane, Washington

As you know, my husband and I travel A LOT! We spend much of our time in warmer climates, specifically the Mohave desert in Arizona. I love the winter heat down there, and the sunsets never seize to amaze me day after day. It’s so nice to escape the winter gloominess of the Pacific Northwest to places far and wide and warm.

But we arrived back home last week, back to Spokane, back to the snow and rain and grey sky. Ho hum… back to winter. As I am trying to get into shape for an upcoming trip to the Dominican Republic, I decided to brave my frigid town and take a walk thru our local streets. It turns out that my little jaunt thru the nearby Northwood Neighborhood

really re-opened my eyes to what a beautiful place we live in. No it’s not hot, no it’s not sunny, but you know what it is? It is crisp, clean, air and beautiful scenery. It is wild turkeys travelling in packs thru my front yard and deer coming down to drink out of the river. It is the honking of Canadian Geese flying in precise V patterns. And it is also friendly neighbors offering a wave and a smile as I pass them by while they’re warming their cars to head out for the day.

I guess all it takes is a running away to far off places often enough to make me fully appreciate what remains behind in my pretty little town of Spokane, Washington. I will do well to remember the lesson I learned today, and that is to never forget to appreciate what you sometimes are leaving behind, because the beauty in the every day of our lives is too abundant to overlook.
